Take / Cover, OV, June 2017
OV Project Space, Portland, OR
‘Take / Cover’ is a one-night-only exhibition by Seattle-based artist Serrah Russell questioning what it means to protect oneself and where we go from fear. Through photography, sculpture, installation and video (including the Portland premiere of ‘Surface’ - a recent short film by the artist in collaboration with writer CL Young and artist Samson Stilwell) the artist explores concepts of shelter, refuge and self-preservation and seeks to understand what is gained and what is lost when we remove ourselves from each other in order to stay safe.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
What surrounds us,
what contains us.
What do we keep,
and what ends up keeping us.
Are we building a shell
or a shelter?
And once built,
how do we escape?
